Our final stop of the day took us to Asnelles to visit Gold Beach – one of the British Landing Beaches. We sat by one of the German gun batteries by the Atlantic Wall and learned about the arrival of the landing craft and true stories of soldiers who landed here just after D-Day in 1944. We managed to take a brief walk on to the beach and take in the scene along the extraordinarily enormous expanse of sand stretching towards Arromanches. The concrete caissons of the Mulberry Harbiur were really clear in the sea as the tide was far out. A fitting end to a brilliant day.
Everyone is in great spirits and looking forward to dinner at the chateau. We will enjoy some food before our evening activities begin.
