To mark His Majesty The King’s Coronation on the 6^th of May, thousands of organisations across the country are getting together to help out in their own local communities by taking part in The Big Help!

Holsworthy College was certainly up for the challenge to take part and to commemorate this historic occasion in the way we do best – by living by our school motto – ‘small enough to know you, big enough to make a difference.’ We decided that the best way to make a difference was to organise a college litter pick of the local area to ensure that Holsworthy looked its smartest in time for the celebrations.

In the afternoon, armed with gloves, pickers, black bags and determination, 50 students from across Years 7 to 10 volunteered their time and effort to help out in HCC’s Coronation Litter Pick! Students were split into 5 small groups, each accompanied by a House Champion, to tidy a specific section which had a high footfall area. Students searched high and low for litter, focussing on the areas behind the Sports Hall and Scout Hut, up by the police station, and lastly in the park and Skate park.

The students worked incredibly hard, and all pitched in with enthusiasm and smiles to help out, resulting in over 15 bags of rubbish and recyclable materials – The shocking find of the day goes to Mercedes and her team for finding an actual broken microwave hidden in the hedge!

As a school, we are incredibly proud of the dedication and pride our pupils have shown in caring for their local area and for taking part in celebrating the historic occasion of the King’s Coronation. All students have been given a certificate of recognition from their House Champions, which we hope will not only remind them of the importance of volunteering, but also encourage them to seek out further opportunities in the future.

Lastly, a big thank you to our 50 student volunteers, our House Champions Miss Sampson, Mr. Bulut, Mrs. Yardley, and Mrs. Godwin, our fantastic Teaching Assistant Tracey and our Vice-Principal Mr. Ruse for making this event such a success!
