Learning Beyond the Classroom:- Tavistock College Year 7 Students discover Devon Libraries Unlimited

17 October 2022 | , ,

During October, as part of their enhanced transition experience at the college, all Year 7 students have received an induction at the local library in Tavistock. The aim of the trip was to promote personal reading and encourage students to make more use of their local library after school and at weekends. The Librarians, Heather Chapman and Denise Ganley, gave students an introduction to the books and services that they offer and reminded students about how to become members or renew their library membership.

“Students really enjoyed the trip and made their teachers very proud. We wanted to remind students about what the library has to offer everyone in the community – including young people. While we were visiting, a mother and toddler group were having a ‘read and singalong ‘and older members were using the PCs. Our students could really see that reading is for everyone.” Shirley Young (School Lead for Reading and Literacy)

During the year we will join with the local library again to offer more opportunities to students such as author visits and World Book Day events. There is even talk of the first “Tavistock Library Festival” – more news to follow soon!
