St Mére Église

The three coaches of children progressed in relaxed fashion this morning as we made our way through beautiful French countryside, with films provided for those that wanted to pass the time with a little distraction.

We arrived in the town of St Mére Église where the trail of red caps and hoodies led to the church in the centre of the square. The children learned about John Steele, an American soldier who, along with his battalion, parachuted in error directly into the town. His parachute became entangled in the pinnacles of the church tower and he dangled there for some 2 hours before he was captured. A model hangs there in his memory.

The market visit was a highly anticipated event for the children and they astounded us with their willingness and confidence to make purchases from the stallholders. Many items of food, souvenirs and gifts were bought!
