Tavistock College receives prestigious Artsmark Award

Pupils and staff at Tavistock College are celebrating after receiving a prestigious Platinum Artsmark Award.

Artsmark is the only creative quality standard for schools, accredited by Arts Council England. It supports them to develop and celebrate arts and cultural education across the whole curriculum, bringing learning to life for children and young people.

To achieve their Artsmark Award, Tavistock College had to develop their arts and cultural provision to embed a broad and ambitious curriculum. This was achieved by creating an overall plan that was committed to and delivered across the whole school.

Tavistock College received professional support and training throughout their journey and developed partnerships and working relationships with companies such as the Royal Shakespeare Company, Theatre Royal Plymouth, Stage-ED and Tie It Up Theatre Co alongside local primary schools and Devon and Torbay Music Education Hub.

The Artsmark assessor said;

‘From the MAT CEO, through to the Principal to the Creative Arts leaders and the wider staff, there is an appreciation of students’ right to access the arts and the benefits that this brings. You are without doubt establishing Tavistock College as a wider force for the good in the arts, as evidenced by (for example) your Transition Choir projects, the Multischools Arts Festival and your growing Community Partnership Programme. You have excellent plans for the future and you are now very well-placed to advocate for the arts, to develop the wider cultural community and to make a difference to the learning and lives of students within and beyond your doors.’

On receiving the award, Tristan Muller-Forster, College Principal said: “We’re extremely proud of achieving our Artsmark Platinum Award. We are and have been for a long time committed to delivering a high-quality arts and cultural education for ALL our young people and we look forward to continuing to grow with Artsmark. Work and achievements such as this one shows our commitment to the overall quality of education we provide for all our young people and for the community in which we serve.”

Dr Darren Henley OBE, Chief Executive of the Arts Council, said:

“I would like to congratulate Tavistock College on their Artsmark Award. Becoming an Artsmark school demonstrates that through offering a broad, ambitious and creative curriculum, young people have the opportunity to develop character and resilience, increasing their knowledge, curiosity and skills that will remain with them through to adult life.”
